diff - Compare Files Line by Line

The diff command is a powerful text comparison utility that compares files line by line and displays the differences between them. It's an essential tool for version control, code review, configuration management, and change tracking. Diff supports multiple output formats, can compare directories recursively, and provides numerous options for ignoring whitespace, case differences, and other variations. The output can be used to create patches for distribution, making it fundamental to software development and system administration workflows.

Basic Syntax

diff [OPTIONS] FILE1 FILE2
diff [OPTIONS] -r DIR1 DIR2
diff [OPTIONS] --from-file=FILE1 --to-file=FILE2

Common Options

Output Format Options

  • -u, --unified[=NUM] - Output unified diff format with NUM context lines (default 3)
  • -U NUM, --unified=NUM - Same as above

Output Formats

Normal Format (Default)

The normal diff format shows line numbers and change indicators:

Format indicators:

  • a - Add (lines after the specified line)
  • c - Change (replace lines at specified range)
  • d - Delete (lines at specified range)

The unified format is most readable and compatible with patch tools:
